Chiswick is a large part of West London, a descendant of an agrarian, fishing community dating since the early 11th century. The name is believed to be derived from an old word for “cheese farm” since the farms here were believed to have supplied an annual cheese fair in the area. The suburb has a long history of beer brewing, a notable company which has been doing this for a few centuries is “Fuller, Smith and Turner”, which own a number of pubs and breweries.
The suburb was home to the Chiswick Empire theatre, which housed opera, plays and ballet performances back in the day until the late 50s. Another notable place of entertainment in the area was The Q theatre, which served as the home of the works of popular dramatist Terrence Rattigan. A descendant of those two nowadays is the Tabard Theatre which offers a new kind of performances for those who love the arts.Chiswick was the site of the first V-2 rocket which hit London during WWII. A memorial to the event stands in the suburb as a reminder to the events of the war, situated on Staveley Road.
A notable example of beautiful architecture is the Chiswick House, a villa built in the Palladian style of the early 18th century. It has changed ownership a few times during the years, its most well-known residents were the Cavendish family during which marked its golden age. During WWII the villa suffered some damage from a V-2 rocket attack as well after it fell into decline during the 19th century. Most of it has been lost sadly, though it is still a historical heritage site and a wonderful reminder of an age past.
Chiswick has useful transportation linking it to other parts of the city, and a number of bridges over the river Thames as well. Mostly bus lines run through the suburb as well as the London Underground. For those interested in sports it would be interesting to know of the local rugby teams Chiswick RFC which play on Saturdays at the Dukes Meadows. There are also rowing clubs among which is the University of London Boat club which sports members like the Sydney Olympics gold medalist Tim Foster and former World Champion Frances Houghton. Actresses Helen Mirren and Kate Beckinsale also live in the area, as well as the frontman of the band Iron Maiden Bruce Dickinson. The area has also been used as a set for the wonderful British science fiction show Dr. Who during the time of the Tenth Doctor played by the brilliant David Tennant.
