Crystal Palace is a splendid area of South London named after the palace of the same name which sadly burned nearly to the ground in a great fire in 1936. The place was made of cast-iron and glass, its original goal was to serve as an exposition site for technological advances during the Industrial Revolution, but later on it served as a site for exhibits, music performances and other forms of entertainment. The fire which destroyed the magnificent building was so large than nearly 90 fire engines and a few hundred firefighters failed to contain the destruction of the place.

It allegedly started in one of the smaller rooms after a reported explosion, which certainly gives reasons to think of a mystery or sabotage by competitors of the newly renovated business. Sadly nowadays even brilliant Sherlock Holmes would have difficulties solving such a case. Unsurprisingly enough the area was a place frequented by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle during his days.

During the 19th century the area was a favorite haunt of Gypsies who frequented the pubs of the area and the now currently nigh-extinct Great North Wood. Today the area has retained much of its Victorian splendor and has a gorgeous park which has many picturesque parts where one may truly appreciate the beauty of combined human effort and nature’s growth and life. The authorities are still considering whether they should build over the original site of the Crystal Palace or if they should leave it as part of the park’s lands as they have done for years. Unfortunately an attempt at renovation of the great building’s remains would be incredibly costly.

It is highly unlikely we will ever see this gem of Victorian construction restored to its former glory and there is hardly anything left of the original construction to work with. On the bright side though the development of the district is always moving forward so things are looking up for it regardless of the loss of its namesake relic.

If you decide to move in the area kindly remember to reserve yourself a parking spot for your removals vehicle – the district can be quite busy with the increasing traffic and growing population of the capital. Having a spot close to your front door will save you an incredible amount of headaches later on and will significantly speed things up during the removal process.
