Finchley is a district in the Northern parts of London where it falls under the jurisdiction of the Borough of Barnet. Its first recorded origins come from around the 13th century where the area was mostly farmlands and was well known for its Highwaymen which prayed on the unwary on the roads there until the 19th century.
That however changed as the Industrial brought in the Railway and electricity among other things and the district grew and eventually the area had working train network crossing it, including the famous London Underground as well.
The area is perched upon a local plateau at 90 metres above sea level, neighbouring the Dollis Valley to the West and the Mutton Brook to the South-West. Interesting landmarks in the area are the St. Mary’s church which dates back to the 13th century, the Avenue House (1859) and the Phoenix cinema which is one of the oldest ones in London, built in the art deco style which was very popular back in the day. Some other great places to visit are the two beautiful statues with martial elements – The Archer which depicts a strangely blocky fellow holding a bow just after the release of an arrow and the more traditional La Délivrance, which was the work of 20th century French sculptor Émile Oscar Guillaume representing a woman holding a sword in a victorious gesture, facing the heavens. It was sculpted as a commemoration of the victory in the First Battle of the Marne in 1914.
Finchley has 17 primary schools so if you have a child this is a wonderful place with plenty of choices for educational opportunities. The area also has six secondary schools and Woodhouse College which serves as a way of preparing teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 for higher education.
