Do you like Inner London? Camden is one of the better-known boroughs within the capital city and pretty close to the central part of it, too. Lucky for you there are plenty of local attractions to keep you occupied during your life here. Its distinct alternative subculture presence is one of its trademarks. Places like the Devonshire Arms, one of the well-known pubs in London with a distinct industrial/cyberpunk undertone despite its Goth interior. Another great place to visit there is the Electric Ballroom, a 70-year old market and rock band venue which has had some permutations going through dance and pop among other genres. Were you a fan of Amy Winehouse? The Hawley Arms Pub was one of the places she used to visit while she was still among us. And if you feel like walking in the footsteps of John Cleese and the rest of Monty Python’s Flying Circus among other great performers from rock and metal bands then do kindly visit Koko. Ask around, you’ll like it.
Other places worth visiting in the area are the eerie Camden Catacombs, a place that surprisingly enough wasn’t used for storing the dead, but rather as underground stables for the horsepower needed by the railway system construction workers. They even have an underground canal, which used to run boats to Regent’s Canal. Always remember while in London – under your feet lies another London, ancient and layered. A great reminder of the past is the Carreras Cigarette Factory built in the popular early 20th century art deco style. It bears distinct Egyptian symbols and a large, imposing statue of the protector-goddess of cats and Lower Egypt – Bastet. Other places which might hold your interest are the Jewish Museum in Bloomsbury, the Freud Museum and the Dickens House. The place also has a number of theatres – Shaftesbury, Bloomsbury, the Dominion and the Roundhouse.
If you feel like having a nice quiet time away from all the bustle of the clubs, then do visit Hampstead Heath – an old park spanning nearly 800 acres which may take a while to explore. Another great reason to stay in Camden don’t you think?
