South East London is one of the London Plan’s five sub regions. The others are South West London, North East London, North London and West London. They were designated in 2008, which is when the old sub regions were done away with. The old sub regions were more simply named North, South, East, West and Central. But whether you are moving from one sub region to another or moving within a single sub region, you will likely need some assistance. The South East sub region corresponds to five London boroughs, which are Lewisham, Greenwich, Southwark, Bromley and Bexley. And while geographically it is quite large, it is not the most heavily populated of the sub regions. There are about 1.3 million people living here and a little more than a third as many jobs. With only 500,000 jobs for so many people, it’s clear that most people in this area commute to other parts of the capital city for work.
The London Plan also determines metropolitan centres and major centres. Within South East London, there is one metropolitan centre (Bromley) and seven major centres (Woolwich, Peckham, Catford, Eltham, Orpington and Bexleyheath). The postcode areas, all beginning with SE, of course, are SE1 through SE28 and the entire region lies south of the River Thames. Brixton and Camberwell lie on its far western border. One of the great things about South East London are all the affordable places to live. While Waterloo is quite pricey because of its proximity to the city centre and the river, there are only a few other parts of the sub region that could be considered expensive, and they are only mildly so. They include Lewisham, Blackheath, Deptford, Rotherhithe, Peckam and SE21. Greenwich, of course, is another, as it has always been quite a fashionable place to live.
But there are plenty of areas in South East London that are considered affordable or even budget areas, such as Dulwich, Crystal Palace, Woolwich, Motthingham and Sydenham. If you are looking for a place to live that is kind to the wallet, South East London may be your best bet. As for attractions, there are plenty. In Greenwich alone, you will find the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Artillery Museum, Eltham Palace and the Old Royal Naval College. And one can visit the Cutty Sark in Lewisham for another great day out. You’ll have plenty of other places to choose from as there are more than 50 historic buildings, 44 art galleries, 25 museums, 9 green spaces and lots of attractions and activities for kids.
You’ll find that South East London is a bit farther from the centre of things than you may be used to in your previous home, especially if you are moving away from the city centre. But giving up a bustling nightlife or access to high street shops doesn’t have to be a downside. There is plenty of open space and some of the best views of the city are from this sub region, so consider yourself lucky to be finding a home with a bit more space in this highly cosmopolitan place.
